Of the other actors in this movie, I have little to say, except for Hillary the Butler. She is having such a good time in this role that you can't help but enjoy her in it. She has a presence of toughness and vulnerability and also a knowing smirk that shows she knows how ridiculous this cartoon of movie could be. But the bad girl of Hollywood has enough attitude and sultry moves to fill this movie to the brim. And luckily for this movie, the talented and beautiful Jolie, kicks ass in this role. The whole point of this movie is to showcase Angelina Jolie as the stylish adventuress Lara Croft, as she out cools, outfights, and outsmarts the bad guys. Now put the plot out of your head because it is only an excuse to show Lara in action. The triangle is in two pieces, in two separate ancient cities, and it is a race to see who will find the pieces first, Lara or the Illuminati. The plot, and it is so unimportant, is a group called the Illuminati who are seeking a mystic triangle that can control time. Once again, Lara Croft the character saves the medium in which she is delivered. Tomb Raider the movie is smart enough to know that it is her character that made the games so popular and is wisely filled with the same thing. The representation of millions of adolescent video game playing young men's fantasies. Sexy, smart, with a sophisticated British accent, she wiggles and jiggles in ultra-cool style throughout her numerous adventures. That hook is the character of Lara Croft. What the series of games do have is a hook, one hell of a hook. What they are, has been done hundreds of times before, and in better games with better graphics. Thousands of players might disagree with me, but honestly, despite what you might have heard, Tomb Raider the games really aren't that good. I think I am there for in a good position to judge Tomb Raider the video game series. I have played literally thousands of video/computer games in my lifetime. He put a good word in for me with the producers of Casino Royale.Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. On Lara Croft Tomb Raider, I became friends with Special Effects supervisor (who does all the real effects stuff on set) Chris Corbould, who had worked on 10 Bond movies from The Spy Who Loved Me to Die Another Day. Allied with CGI this created a convincing underwater environment. I used an old fashioned technique where you smoke up a stage and light it appropriately. Logistically it wasn’t practical to take Angelina and other actors underwater to film this sequence, so I designed a dry for wet studio. In the movie Lara Croft travels underwater to The Lunar Temple on an underwater bike. Then, my first feature film as an overall visual effects Supervisor was Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. That work was punctuated by work on feature films, my first being James Cameron’s Aliens. I also designed the model precinct and the suburb. I designed the concept for the original flying car on Space Precinct, but it was felt that my original streamlined version didn’t look too police-car-like so it was modified to look more angular. I worked for him off-and-on for over a decade designing concepts on commercials and other shows like Space Precinct – a television series broadcast between 19 combining many elements of Gerry Anderson’s previous series like Space 1999, UFO and Thunderbirds. I began by storyboarding and concept designing craft before moving onto Special Effects Director on Terrahawks – my first professional job in the industry. He kept referring to 29 Seconds to Zero in a very complimentary way, which was nice.Īfter I’d shown him my amateur work, I systematically kept in touch with him over the period of about a year and then when the time came, he offered me the job. When I met him for the first time, I was able to show him some of my films and he seemed to be politely impressed. Then, on 29 Seconds to Zero, an ambitious film project reconstructing the battle of Pearl Harbour, I assisted him with the filming and added some visual effects shots.īy then, I was getting a bit more confident with the 16mm cameras (very popular with amateur movie makers at that time) we were using.Ģ9 Seconds to Zero, which was screened on BBC Two, greatly influenced my life because Gerry Anderson, one of the creators of Thunderbirds, saw it and was impressed. Ian's lifelong passion for films, since working as an apprentice projectionist in a cinema as a boy, had led him to making films in a mini studio in his garage.Īlan told Ian about my interest in film making and I then helped him a bit on his epic, Hour of the Eagle: a film about a Luftwaffe bombing attack on Rosyth docks on the Firth of Forth. I went to school with Alan Rintoul who introduced me to his dad, Ian. I got into the James Bond films around the same time and really wanted to work on them too.

APA Formatting and Style Guide (7th Edition).Writing Letters of Recommendation for Students. Gretsch were more of a follower in many ways. Gibson had the Stereo Vari-tone thing happening in the late 50s, and Gretsch were trying to keep up with them. Project-O-Sonic pickups were an option, but it’s been well documented that Gretsch wired some in mono, like the ’58 single-cut guitar I have. Gretsch built them with regular Filter’Trons, and some have the Project-O-Sonic stereo electronics. I’ve never had, or personally seen, a Penguin with DeArmond pickups, although, obviously, they made them. I mean, you often see Gretsch guarantee cards, but it’s pretty funny to see ‘White Penguin’ on there! I don’t know of another one that has the original guarantee card. It still has the original white strap and the original paperwork, which is cool. The binding on this one is in great condition. White Penguins are essentially Jet model guitars the body shape is identical. It’s wired with two separate volume controls – one for each pickup – along with a master volume, and it has a tone switch, so there’s no tone knob. Even the earlier DeArmond Gretsch guitars sound completely different. You can’t pick up any Fender or Gibson and make it sound like a Gretsch. You know the slogan, ‘That great Gretsch sound’? Well, it’s certainly their sound. Gibson Explorers sell for five times as much, but they’re rarer than those and they’re much, much rarer than ’Bursts. So I think they should probably be worth more than that. Nowadays, they go for anything between $125,000 to $150,000. They were cheaper than the White Falcon, but not now! This ’58 single-cut has got an appraisal from 1986 by George Gruhn for $88,000. Includes a deluxe hardshell case. The White Penguin came out in 1955 – the same year as the White Falcon – but they weren’t even put on the price list until 1959.
